Semiconductor Innovation in an Investment Constrained Economy
Updated: 2012-06-30 20:53:03
The current innovation climate in the semiconductor industry is alive and well but entrepreneurs have to adjust to the realities of the current economic situation and investment trends. The world's governmental economic development agencies have always looked at Silicon Valley with envy and paid big money to try to find the key which would unlock the secrets

Lantronix introduced the PremierWave XC, which is a hybrid GSM/GPRS and Ethernet dual-port serial device server. The PremierWave XC allows remote access to, and management of, virtually any serial device via a GSM/GPRS or Ethernet network. The Linux-based application server features ease of use, robust device server functionality, and GPRS connectivity. The Lantronix PremierWave XC [...]
French company Ionitec, a subsidiary of Surfaces Synergie (MaƮche, France), has developed an antimicrobial and self-cleaning titanium dioxide (TiO2) coating. The functional properties of the coating are triggered by exposure to a UV light source resulting in photocatalysis. The material and process have been tested to ISO 10678 (determination of the photocatalytic effect) and ISO [...]
Texas Instruments announced their TPA3116D2, TPA3118D2 and TPA3130D2 analog-input class-D stereo amplifiers. The new TI devices can be used in soundbars, after-market automotive solutions, portable audio docks, and LCD televisions. The TPA3116D2, TPA3118D2 and TPA3130D2 are available now in a 10-mm x 6-mm 32-pin HTSSOP package. Prices start at $1.80 for the TPA3116D2, $1.65 for [...]
Last week at Sensors Expo, the entire MEMS industry was focused on sensor fusion, also referred to as combo sensors. Sensor fusion goes beyond simply integrating multiple sensors in a package or a system for area and power savings and includes incorporating data processing to enable more accurate sensing. Yole Development predicts that discrete MEMS devices sales are actually going to decline over the next 5 years, but will be more than compensated for by the rapid growth of combo sensors consisting of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers (combining a 3-axis accelerometer, a 3-axis gyro, and a 3-axis magnetometer creates a 9 degrees of freedom combo sensor)View the full article HERE
Autodesk announced an Android version of their ForceEffect conceptual simulation app. ForceEffect replaces the slide ruler, protractor and manual calculations that engineers have relied upon for years. According to the company, the app represents the next evolution of engineering technology. The app was first launched for iOS devices in November 2011. To date, the free [...]
Analog Devices introduced the AD9128 16-bit, 1.25-GSPS transmit D/A converter (DAC). The ADI AD9128 features a JESD204A-compatible serial input, on-chip 32-bit NCO (numerically-controlled oscillator), and 4-wire serial port interface. The AD9128′s high-speed serial interface simplifies and improves the data connection between the DAC and the FPGA in a typical system implementation. The AD9128 is sampling [...]
Gartner estimates that in 2012, worldwide PC shipments will grow 4.4% over the year. Another report cites that growth in IP traffic will lead to increased demand for data centers. Further, analysts believe that IP traffic will triple by 2015, and lead to 50% growth in data storage needs. Growing demand for computers and data centers signals a strong market for processor firms Intel and ARM, both of which saw quarterly results surpass market expectations.View the full article HERE
